what is Turkmen literature?
The literature of Turkmenistan is rich in oral traditions, shared with other Oghuz Turks. The most famous is the epic Gorkut Ata, reflecting the pre-Islamic life of the nomads. It is performed by bards, the most famous of which is Magtymguly that lived in the 18th century, reputed as the representative of the properly Turkmen peculiarity. His successors were Seitnazar Seyidi (1775-1836) and Kurbandurdy Zelili (1780-1836).
There was also poetry in Chagatai, the great literary language of Central Asia. It was that poetic tradition that was cultivated well into the Soviet era, not without tragic episodes, such as the case of the female poet Annasultan Kekilova who in 1971 was sent to mental hospital for having composed poems criticizing the government.
