what is I-Kiribati literature?
The culture of Kiribati is not particularly famous for its literature. Other aspects appeared as much more conspicuous, at least in the eyes of early anthropologists, such as Gerd Koch who came to Kiribati in 1963 to study its traditions and forms of life. He described, among other things, the ritualised duels and the peculiar martial arts that developed in the archipelago, categorised into several techniques and types of combat. The Kiribatian traditional armour made with woven coir and stingray skin is a curiosity, just as the swards made with fish teeth.
Very few contemporary writers are to be associated with this tiny archipelago whose existence is seriously menaced by the rising sea levels. One of them is was a poet and feminist Teresia Teaiwa (1968-2017), one of the strongest voices of the Pacific in the United States, even if only her father was actually from Kiribati; herself, she was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.
