what is Australian literature?
Some people say it is in Australia that we find some of humanity's oldest stories, such as that of the heavenly sisters, the Pleiades. Also nowadays, the Indigenous literature, works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers (i.e. the Melanesian writers on the islands that belong to the Australian state of Quinsland) forms a powerful, original strand. Notable figures include Oodgeroo Noonuccal (the author of a book of poetry, We are going) and Alexis Wright. On the other hand, Many Australian writers grapple with the country’s colonial history and its impact on both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Authors like Patrick White (the author of Voss) and Tim Winton explore these themes in their works. A strong sense of place and the Australian landscape is prevalent, with authors often drawing on rural and coastal settings. This regionalist aspect is evident in the works of writers like Henry Lawson and Miles Franklin. There exist also a richness of multicultural and transcultural expression by immigrant authors. Among contemporary authors, such names as Kate Grenville, Christos Tsiolkas (The Slap), and Hannah Kent are worth retaining.
